Joao Luiz Pippi Salle, MD, PhD, FRCSC, FAAP

Dr. Joao Pippi Salle is Head of Pediatric Urology at the Hospital for Sick Children and a full professor with the department of Surgery/University of Toronto. After completing his medical degree in 1972, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Dr. Pippi Salle underwent his 7 years surgical training in General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Urology in the USA, South Africa and Canada. He completed his PhD studies while in Brazil, developing a surgical technique for the treatment of refractory urinary incontinence in children.
Dr. Pippi Salle was an Associate Professor of Surgery (Urology) at McGill University from 1996 to 2003. During this time he was the Chief of the Division of Urology at The Montreal Children’s Hospital. He moved to Toronto in 2003 as an Associate Professor of the Dept. of Surgery.
Dr. Pippi Salle has been involved in several educational activities since early in his career. He has chaired several pediatric urological events and workshops. He is president of the International Society of Hypospadias and Disorders of Sex Development. He has always been involved in post-graduate teaching and received the Surgical Teaching Award from the Montreal Children’s Hospital and the McGill Urology Teaching Award in 1997.
Dr. Pippi Salle has 85 published papers in peer reviewed journals and is the author of 34 book chapters. He has been invited by several institutions around the world where he delivered more than 180 lectures.
Dr. Pippi Salle is honoured to be chosen as the Herbie Doctor of the year, he feels that it is so very rewarding to be recognized for something he is so passionate about. Dr. Salle comes from a developing country himself, and knows what the opportunity to have a child treated at SickKids, one of the best hospitals in the world, means. He feels that thanks to the integration of these great organizations, SickKids is able to provide care for those who most need it, worldwide. Dr. Salle is proud of the hospital, of Herbie Fund, and of Canada. He believes it is a great privilege to be part of this wonderful country and he hopes he can continue doing what he loves most, helping children from all over the world with his work.
His wife Nicola and 4 children Michelle, Alexandre, Gabriela and Ana Claudia have been supportive companions on his ventures and he now is a grandpa of a beautiful baby boy born December of 2009.
